that is dangerous for us. since we are talking about jobs and the 1970's, pittsburgh lost 250,000 jobs because of the upsweep of the steel mills. we have cleaner air and cleaner water locally, but we will have a mess we can never clean up. there is a myriad of problems, and i understand said governor rendell, who i used to be in isve with and now don't love, getting close to $1 million going around the state commenting on how wonderful the shell drilling is. host: what did you hear there? guest: i think when you talk about the economy, when you talk about the evening news, number one, i think the evening news -- the audiences are declining. they need to do what they can it to get viewers. i think there are more places to go get information out. and you do not have to rely on the evening news. you can get on the computer, and there is a lot you can find out there. the big problem in terms of the media, and this is a point we make in the book, we tend to think of the internet as a network. it is wonderful becaus

save us all. save us all. the democrats do not do more to show us that we cannot go back to the old days -- $4 a gallon for gasoline. people had to do everything they could just to get back and forth from work. the republicans are spending so much money. i think we need a law that could regulate how much money can be pushed into that. guest: robert makes a profound statement, you're absolutely right. what we are seeing now, and especially because of the citizens united supreme court decision, is people are upset because of the money that is being spent. large corporations and wealthy individuals are not content with the money that they have so they are using it to deeply influenced the political process. we are talking about huge amounts of money. correct me if i am wrong, but i think we will see double the amount of money going into campaigns this campaign, than in the last. many of those commercials will be funded by large corporations, some by foreign- owned corporations. clearly, robert is rig

guest: we use a the same automated telephone system we've been using. there are more challenges coming in as fewer and fewer younger people are using land lines. from a polling perspective it's not a huge issue in 2010 because the turnout of younger adults is likely to be lower. younger adults, whether they have a land line or not tend to be much more supportive of president obama than their elders. and, as a result, if you get a good sample of yuck adults in your poll -- young adults it works out fairly well. in 2012 there will be methods experimented with for folks who don't have a land line. host: comparing that to an actual person on the phone talking to a potential voter do you get a different feel when you're talking one on one versus the automated system? guest: well, the automated system has couple advantages. number one from a trending point of view, when we ask a person about barack obama's job approval, the person is hearing the exact same voice with the exact same inflection and the exact same nuance that a person heard on january 20, 2009.
